Nisaka-toge Pass Route

Through Thick Ferns to Kii Province
About 8 Km, 2 hrs. and 30 mins. from JR Umegadani Station to JR Kii-Nagashima Station

Nisaka-toge For centuries, the gateway to Kishu. Province was Tsuzuratotoge Pass. However, since the time of Tokugawa Noriyori, founder of the Kishu-han Fief of the Tokugawa Shogunate, Nisaka-toge Pass route lying to the east became the formal entry to the Province. Presently Route 42 and the JR Kisei Line also cross Nisaka-toge Pass. Nisaka-toge Station to Nisaka-toge Pass runs along Route 42. From the pass a natural winding path leads down past nearby Okimi-daira, a popular viewing spot.
Be sure not to miss the board engraved with two haiku, 5-7-5 syllable poetry, one of them created by Suzuki Bokushi, a travel writer from the Edo Period.

A teahouse is said to have been on the Pass until the mid 1930’s.
